Portions of his American account appeared in the pages of these periodicals before being published with additions in book form. He was a good observer, but his characteristic English dislike of slavery colored his observations. He spent most of his time in the North, by steamer on Ohio to Louisville, continuing as far south as Nashville and dipping into Missouri to see St. Louis. The account is valuable for his comments on that part of the South which lay within the Federal lines.
