He landed at New York and, went to Lexington, KY, and thence to Nashville, presumably by Louisville, and on through Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Lynchburg to Richmond, where he spent most of his time. From this place, he made trips to the seat of war in western Virginia, to the battlefield of Manassas, and down the James to Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. He left by railroad from Richmond to Norfolk, embarked on a flag-of-truce boat to Fortress Monroe, went by steamer to Baltimore and by railway to Washington and direct to New York. His account is concerned almost wholly with the South. Day’s sympathies were with the Confederates; he even defended slavery and registered no objections to the custom of chewing tobacco. He was thoroughly convinced that the Confederacy would win its independence and he hoped for immediate recognition by England and France.
