Upcoming Diversity Opportunities, March 9th- March 15th

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will send out upcoming opportunities every week we think will be of interest. We hope that you will help us continue to build a library culture of diversity and inclusion.


ESS Speaker Series – Darwin Day Lecture – Erik Peterson
Monday March 11, 12:00pm-1:30pm Bond Life Sciences Center 171

Erik Peterson, from the University of Alabama, will discuss Darwin, Wallace and the racist birth of anthropology

Book Discussion: Harbor Me
Monday March 11, 3:30pm-4:30pm Townsend Hall 220

There will be a book discussion on the book, Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson.  This book features the stories of six children who find comraderie with each other as they handle difficult issues pertaining to their race and ethnicity.

Jacqueline Woodson is the 2018-2019 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. She received the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and the 2018 Children’s Literature Legacy Award, and is the 2014 National Book Award Winner for her New York Times bestselling memoir Brown Girl Dreaming, which was also a recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award, a Newbery Honor, the NAACP Image Award and a Sibert Honor.

Ms. Woodson will be a visiting author during the Unbound Book Festival in April.

 

Centering Intersectionality

Join IDE’S Office of Inclusive Engagement for our Core Concept Series. Diversity and inclusion are labels used to express complex, multi-faceted organizational strategies, goals and values. The purpose of the Core Concepts Series is to provide members of the Mizzou community with a foundational understanding of essential ideas to promote diversity and inclusion at Mizzou.

Pre-Registration is required for all sessions. Participants must attend three presentations to earn a Certificate of Completion.

 

Compassion as a Workplace Skill
Wednesday March 13th 12:00pm-1:00pm 305 Hill Hall

Join IDE’s Office of Inclusive Engagement for our Communicating Across Differences Series. This series is designed to enhance the capacity of faculty, staff and students to engage in conversations about challenging, emotionally laden topics (i.e., race, discrimination, policy, politics, etc.). The skills learned in this series can be applied in the workplace, classroom, and interpersonal and community contexts. Participants are encouraged to bring real-life situations to the sessions to serve as practice and learning opportunities

Pre-Registration is required for all sessions. Participants must attend three presentations to earn a Certificate of Completion.

 

Queer Womxn Through History

Take a step back in time as we explore queer womxn’s history over the last century. This museum style exhibit will glimpse into the world of famous queer womxn through the decades.

The true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.

Women’s Poetry Night
Thursday March 14th 6:00pm Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center

All are welcome to come celebrate our annual Women’s poetry Night! Join renowned and up-and-coming poets and spoken word artists from MU and beyond as they share their literary work. Refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to sign up for a performance slot – please go to ‘forms’ and fill out the form titled “Women’s Poetry Night Sign-Up”. You will be added to the performance roster and a confirmation email will be sent with further details.

This series is designed to engage creativity, innovation and kinesthetic learning methods to reflect on inclusion and diversity topics. Participants will be encouraged to actively engage in creative processes with the underlying premise that diversity and inclusion are the engine of innovation and excellence.

Cultural Immersion lunch – E Week The International Student Experience

Come learn more about the College of Engineering’s international programs through a short presentation and an informal panel about the experiences of our very own international students.

9th Annual MSO Conference
Friday March 15th, 6:00pm -9:00pm Memorial Union

The MSO Annual Spring Conference is one of the largest MSO events held on Campus each year. It is a two day event in which we invite several nationally recognized Muslim speakers to the University of Missouri to give lectures, workshops and Q&A sessions. The Spring Conference’s goal is to strengthen our relationship with Allah (God) SWT by gaining knowledge through the lectures and workshops held. Our conferences have seen great success in the past and are continuing to grow, strengthening relationships with individuals from the Campus community as well as the greater Columbia and Mid-Missouri area, bringing awareness of the religious and cultural diversity here on Mizzou campus.

Help the Libraries Get Bonus Money on Mizzou Giving Day

Mizzou Giving Day starts next Wednesday, March 13, at noon and ends on the 14th at noon. If you are active on social media, please consider participating in the social media challenges. Winners as chosen by Central Advancement will earn bonus money for the unit or program of their choice.The Libraries have received social media bonus money in 2017 and 2018. We don’t want to break our winning streak!

How to enter:
  • Facebook: Users enter the challenge by commenting their entry under the challenge post.
  • Twitter: Users enter by replying to the challenge Tweet thread.
  • Instagram: Users enter by posting their entry to their Instagram Story or as a post in their feed, using #MizzouGivingDay and tagging @Mizzou.

Social media challenge schedule:

    • Day 1
      • 12 PM – Throwback Challenge
        • No matter when you were last on Mizzou’s campus, post a photo that takes you back to a great Mizzou memory!
      • 1 PM – Find the Tiger Student Challenge
        • 5 stuffed tigers will be hidden throughout campus and clues will be posted throughout the day to hint their location.
        • Instructions will be attached to each tiger for the finder to claim their prize.
        • Open to students only.
      • TBD – 2 PM – If You Could Ask Dr. George Smith Anything… Challenge
        • Post a question you’d like for Mizzou’s Nobel Prize winner to answer. Dr. Smith will answer the winning question.
      • 4 PM – Mizzou Pets Challenge
        • Post a photo of your pet in their best MU gear!
    • Day 2
      • 8 AM – Show Your Stripes Challenge
        • Show us how you’re bleeding black and gold today! Your best MU outfit, your home or office decor, decals on your car – however you’re showing the world you’re #MizzouMade, we want to see it.
        • 11 AM – All challenge winners announced

Pop-Up Exhibit: Show Me Missouri Women
March 5-9, State Historical Society- Columbia Research Center Main Gallery

Join SHSMO for this special one-week display of materials that share the story of how women helped shape the Show-Me State. Society archivists have selected a wide array of their favorite photographs, letters, art, journals, and other artifacts illustrating changes in gender roles and women’s ongoing fight for equality. An SHSMO archivist will be available to discuss the materials on March 5 from 2–4 p.m. The pop-up exhibit will be in the Columbia center’s art gallery alongside other paintings of interest. Join Mizzou Women in Media and ONA Mizzou on Tuesday, March 5th for a panel discussion with Audrey Cooper, Editor in Chief of The San Francisco Chronicle, and Millie Tran, the Global Growth Editor at The New York Times. We’ll talk about their professional journeys, their rise into management, the value of mentorship and more. Associate Professor Amy Simons will moderate our discussion.

Support for Audrey Cooper’s visit is provided by the William Randolph Hearst Endowment for Visiting Professionals.

 

Distinguished Lecture with Dr. Tererai Trent
Tuesday, March 5th 6:30pm-7:45pm Missouri Theatre

We are excited to have Dr. Tererai Trent, internationally recognized author, humanitarian, and speaker, visit Mizzou in commemoration of International Women’s Day and in honor of Black History Month! Distinguished as Oprah Winfrey’s “All-Time Favorite Guest”, Dr. Trent is a scholar, humanitarian, motivational speaker, educator, mentor, and founder of Tererai Trent International, a foundation which envisions empowered rural communities where all children have access to quality education regardless of their gender or socio-economic backgrounds. Her ethnographic storytelling takes the audience on a journey into the cultural ethos of Africa, a culture steeped in tradition, that shaped who she is and the social disadvantages she overcame. Her journey is the embodiment of one person’s determination to overcoming barriers of generational poverty and intercultural conflict that is embedded in ones’ life’s journey.

During her visit to Mizzou, Dr. Trent will address issues of social justice through education, empowerment of girls and women, and universal access to quality education, regardless of gender or socio-economic backgrounds. Her 2017 book, The Awakened Woman, inspires and challenges the potential within each person.

CoMo Africa Fest 2019

CoMo Africa Fest 2019 – “The Power and Promise of Women” at  Friday, March 8th from 6-9 p.m. in the Missouri Theatre. Our third annual celebration of African Cultures will feature female performers and speakers representing Africa and all facets of the African diaspora.

Join us for singing, drumming, dance, African art and more!  Co-hosts this year are Jabberwocky Studios and the Mizzou African Graduate Student and Professional Association.

Center for Missouri Studies Opening Fall 2019, Columbia Research Center to Close for Move

August 10, 1821, marked the first official day of statehood, and 198 years later, a new chapter in the preservation and exploration of Missouri’s eventful past will begin with the August 10, 2019, opening of the State Historical Society of Missouri’s new Columbia headquarters, the Center for Missouri Studies.

To prepare and move the invaluable collections from the Society’s current location in Ellis Library, the Columbia Research Center will be closed to the public beginning April 19, 2019. This closure will last until August 12, 2019.
