MOspace to Include Digital Object Indentifiers
MOspace, the University of Missouri institutional repository, will soon include DOIs. DOIs – Digital Object Identifiers – offer a persistent way to reference and access online documents. Style guides, such as APA, require that DOIs be included in citations when they are available.
Assigning DOIs to items in MOspace will be advantageous for authors and researchers. Authors will have a widely recognized identifier for their works. Researchers will have a persistent way to cite and access MOspace items of interest to them.
This positive development for MOspace was made possible thanks to the advocacy of our librarians, exploration by MOspace staff, and approval and support from library administration.
DSpace Community Annual Report 2017-July 2018 Now Available
The DSpace Community Annual Report 2017-July 2018 is now available. MOspace uses DSpace repository platform.
The Report provides an overview of the user community, membership, two brief community profiles, a technical overview, governance, finance, and events. In this report you can learn more about the DSpace community, current initiatives, and progress towards the release of DSpace 7. Members of the DSpace community helped in developing this report: Terry Brady (Georgetown University Library); Claudio Cortese (4Science); Tim Donohue (DuraSpace); Felicity Dykas (University of Missouri Libraries); Valorie Hollister (DuraSpace); Salwa Ismail (Georgetown University Library); (Mariya Maistrovskaya (University of Toronto Libraries); Michele Mennielli (DuraSpace); Carol Minton Morris (DuraSpace); Kristi Searle (DuraSpace); Samu Viita (National Library of Finland).
DSpace is a community-based, open source project that produces the DSpace repository platform. With a 16-year history, strong membership support, and active participation from a wide variety of stakeholder institutions located all over the world 2017-2018 was a year of progress toward the key community priority of developing and releasing DSpace 7 with a new, single Angular user interface and enhanced REST API. The technical roadmap for 2017 is focused on DSpace 7 development. As a production repository DSpace needs to meet the needs of large and small stakeholder institutions, so minor updates have been released as needed. At the same time the bulk of technical efforts were focused on DSpace 7 which included a great deal of groundwork and foundation support for the new REST API. Plans for a Beta release of DSpace 7 with support for entities are on track for early 2019. Building and sustaining a strong community is a central goal for the DSpace Project.
The New Jim Crow: One Read Program Events
The following events and exhibitions have been scheduled to facilitate conversation regarding this year’s One Read Program selection: The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. In this incisive critique, former litigator-turned-legal-scholar Michelle Alexander provocatively argues that we have not ended racial caste in America: we have simply redesigned it. The New Jim Crow challenges the civil rights community–and all of us–to place mass incarceration at the forefront of a new movement for racial justice in America.
A Brief Moment in the Sun Art Contest

2018 One Read Keynote Speaker: Dr. Demetria Frank

Dr. Demetria Frank, Assistant Professor of Law at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, will be discussing mass incarceration and The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness By Michelle Alexander, this year’s One Read selection.
July-October: The New Jim Crow – One Read Program Exhibit
An exhibit in the Ellis Library Colonnade features a timeline showing the increasing numbers of incarcerated Missourians over the past four decades. Key moments in law, the privatization of prisons, and stories of anonymous Mizzou Tigers impacted by incarceration are highlighted.

The One Read Program, which promotes conversations regarding diversity, inclusion, and social justice through students, faculty, and staff reading a particular book together, is sponsored by Mizzou Law and Univerisity Libraries.

Newshub Training Open to All Libraries Staff, Sept. 14
The Marketing Team is holding an open Newshub training for all staff on September 14 from 10 to 11 am in 213 Ellis Library. It organizes your PDFs into a fully searchable database, allows you to annotate those PDFs, and share them with colleagues. Mendeley is also a social network, helping you discover researchers who share interests and see the papers that interest them.

Welcome to Christina Pryor, Coordinator for NNLM
The University of Missouri Libraries are pleased to announce that Christina Pryor has been hired as the new Missouri coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine in the Midcontinental Region. Christina has a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Journalism from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She is coming to us from the University of Washington Health Sciences Library in Seattle where she served as the assistant director and community health education coordinator. Her previous positions include consulting and education services manager for Amigos Library Services, reference manager for the St. Louis County Library System, and medical research librarian for Covidien/Mallinckrodt. Christina is currently serving as the conference chair for the Library Marketing and Communications Conference, which will be held in St. Louis this fall.
